Your Skin Type can be broken down many ways. But let’s start with
the tone of your skin, is it Snow white, Olive, or Ebony black.
More the likely it is some where in between. Skin tone is determined by the
content of melanin, the pigment that gives skin color. The more melanin in
the skin the darker it is.
There is a scale from 1 to 6 that dermatologists use to judge how
sensitive skin is to light. For the most part this comes from the amount
of melanin in the skin. The more melanin the skin it will resist sun damage
and will be able to recover from sunburn and irritation. So if you are a one
you will burn, not tan and if you are a 6 you will be able to resist
sunburn longer than other kinds of skin.
People with light complexions are far more susceptible to skin damage
and photo-aging from repeated exposure to sunlight. Having little or no
melanin in your skin leaves you with few natural defenses.
The pluses: If you do get a cut or scrape your skin is less likely
to scar. In most cases the skin responds well to cosmetic procedures
like dermabrasions, acid peels and cosmetic surgery.
The minuses: Being thinner you already know that what the sun can do. Also
the skin can be more vulnerable to broken blood vessels and capillaries, along
the cheeks and side of your nose. Snow White skin is also more susceptible to
Precancerous and cancerous skin lesions.

Add just a little melanin to your skinny, will act differently. The skin
can resist the sun more. Pores tend to be tiny, giving the skin a very smooth
appearance. As you add more melanin to the skin tends to be thicker and oilier.
With the prospect of fewer wrinkles as you get older.
The minuses: Pores can be larger. With the extra oil can also bring
blemishes. Should the skin become irritated, mild trauma, or from chemicals,
this inflammation can lead to skin discoloration.
As you move closer to 5 and 6 the skin has the most melanin in it. Your
skin will more than likely age better remaining smoother and wrinkle free. The
skin tends to be oilier with a greater density of oil glands.
The minuses: Skin with a melanin content can be more susceptible to
inflammation. Even a mild case of acne can lead to extreme inflammatory
reaction. This process may cause visible scarring and a change in the skins
pigment. Large scars that are raised are called Keloids.
Many men are bothered with razor bumps. This is when curly hairs work their
way back into the skin after shaving.
In the book The Wrinkle Cure Nicholas Perricone, MD gives a Case
Study on the different skin tones. With his skin tone descriptions he also
goes into the different parts of the world that these skin tones come from.
